It used to be that Twitter only let you apply for a verified Twitter account if you were someone or something famous. As of July 19th, they are allowing anyone to request that little blue checkmark.
It’s not exactly clear why they are doing this, but they’ve opened up the process to all of us.
In defining who can get approved, Twitter says that “an account may be verified if it is determined to be of public interest.”
Okay, so they aren’t handing out free blue checkmarks.
“We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification,” said Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter’s vice president of user services. “We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience.”
I might apply just to see what happens.
